Augustiner Braustuben,Munich

This authentic tavern at the back door of the Augustiner brewery combines the Bavarian camaraderie and flavorful fare without the tourist circus. It occupies the former horse stalls, but don't fret—the odor has long since dissipated. Best of all, they fill the massive Mass glasses for one of the lowest prices in town.

Auerbachs Keller, Leipzig

The most famous tavern in eastern Germany, this is where Goethe staged the debate between Faust and Mephistopheles. The tavern dates from 1530 and has a series of murals evoking the Faust legend.

Zum Roten Ochsen, Heidelberg

Otherwise known as “The Red Ox”, Zum Roten Ochsen is one of Heidel’s oldest — and most beloved — student pubs. This beer hall sports many motifs found in baroque architecture and a unique saddle roof which sets it apart from the rest of the locale, and the walls of this quaint establishment hold nearly 300 years of beer hall heritage. In the evening, the piano plays a medley of German folk songs and student hymns, all while merry-makers enjoy a playful round of drinking games.

Hirschgarten, Munich

With an open space large enough to hold 8,000 merry-making guests, Hirschgarten is best known as the world’s largest beer garden. Shaded from the sun by the garden’s equally famous chestnut trees, local and foreign revellers alike raise huge masses (those large beer mugs common throughout Germany) filled with Augustiner and Tegernseer Spezial Hell brew, and indulge in a feast of delicious Bavarian Brotzeit offerings such as rotisserie chicken, roast pork, pork knuckles, spareribs and salads.
